Enhancing reading comprehension

This series of webinars focuses on boosting reading comprehension. Reading is a highly complex cognitive process that integrates prior knowledge with new information to create meaning from text. The ultimate goal of all reading is comprehension. 

We will explore effective strategies, scaffolding techniques and explicit teaching methods designed to make comprehension more accessible. 

We will cover:

  • Key reading comprehension strategies – what they are and what they aren’t 

  • Practical tips for evaluating and enhancing your reading instruction

  • Boosting language comprehension, background knowledge and vocabulary for all learners

  • How we can support independent comprehension

  • The ingredients of a reading lesson

Equip yourself with the tools to support independent comprehension and transform your reading lessons.

This series draws on the best available research-evidence and shares practical ideas, resources and strategies to exemplify how evidence can be actioned in the classroom.

We will explore the NC requirements and The Reading Framework (DfE).

  • Session 1 - Reading comprehension: the role of background knowledge

  • Session 2 - Reading to learn: developing non-fiction readers

    Monday 10th February 2025 (3.45pm - 4.45pm)

  • Session 3 - Reading comprehension: strategies in a reading lesson

    Monday 3rd March 2025 (3.45pm - 4.45pm)
